A Fantastic Journey Lecture:
In this lecture, we had a guest speaker who was a former student of Huddersfield University. He now worked for Fantastic, an award winning marketing agency. He spoke to use about university, placements as well as working at Fantastic.

He began the lecture by outlining the core values of the company, which was: people, results and value. He spoke about how valuable contacts and knowing clients are as well as having a good relationship with them. He then went onto speak about placements, which is where he found Fantastic. I took notes of the slide behind him as it had these following steps on it:
- Start the search early (which apparently he didn't do and was lucky to get a place working at Fantastic).
-Create an online portfolio (fantasticmedia.co.uk/placements/kickstart-your-career-in-the-creative-industry).
-Don't limit yourself to one company, go to as many interviews as possible.
These tips are helpful when it comes to finding my placement as it may not always be easy. He also spoke about choosing smaller companies so you can really get involved and see all the aspects of a design company. If you go to a large company, you may only see one part of it and not grasp a feel for what it would be like working for a design company.

He also gave some helpful tips when actually working in the placement. These were (I have expanded on the points) :
- Be a yes person and try and do as many jobs as possible to get a feel of all aspects of the environment.
-Work hard to make yourself stand out and known as they may consider you to get the job.
-Love what you're doing.
-Ask if you're unsure.
-Get advice/help from co-workers.

When considering placement, you have to ask yourself questions like 'what do you want to do?', 'what do you want to learn?' and 'where do you want to do it?'. Its important to not be restricted by your job title and be able to do any project that you're asked to do. You need to consider what the company wants you to do and don't be afraid of any opportunities you don't feel ready for. Going from a university environment to a work environment may make you feel out of your depth but its important to give 100% as you have been given the opportunity. You have to embrace new challenges and even help others out as well. You need to become essential to the company. These were all points talked about by the guest speaker and will be very useful when I am looking for a placement.
