I did not attend this session due to illness, however, I did gather notes and information from my peers, as well as looking at the brief, and decided to recreate the session as it was. I took some objects around me and sketched them. I enjoy drawing so I was keen to do this task. I chose to work in Biro because I am comfortable with it and it is good for creating rough sketches.
The first object I chose to draw was my hard drive as it was right in front of me.
The hardness of the biro made shading hard to achieve. This would have been more effective using a soft pencil or chalk. However, I got the perspective correct, apart from the wire leading from the hard drive which could have been positioned better. Another down side of biro is the fact you can't erase it. I do like the roughness of the object and it fits with my loose style.
The second object I chose to draw was my Starbucks cup, as it was also on the table in front of me.
I like the way this one turned out in terms of perspective and proportion. I feel this was my favourite image that I created. I especially like the indented area in the lid and feel the shading was applied well. I feel using Biro was again effective because it looks rough as well as accurate. However, the bottom of the cup could be better aligned to the top.
My final piece of drawing was of the mouse that was attached to the computer I was using.
I used cross hatching in this sketch to try and improve the shadowed areas. However, I feel it looks too rough and not as minimal as the cup above. This is my least favourite sketch because the biro didn't work well and the shading is too harsh. I liked working with this material but I do feel that a mix media piece may have worked better.
Although I didn't attend the session, I feel I have practiced my observational drawing and found it to be a successful task that will bring me onto doing the next terms brief. I may not have completed the task to the exact specifications but feel like I have gained just as much from practicing with one material on a variety of different objects. Overall, I enjoyed the task and will continue practicing observational drawing. Drawing is a key asset of graphic design and especially sketching as you will need to communicate your ideas through thumbnail sketches and therefore I feel sketching is very important.
